I share two more art quilts that belong in this year’s Unity and Wonder series.

A blue child tenderly holds a green rabbit nuzzled with the head of the pet next to their chin. In the background are roses, peaches, butterflies, crab, cat, whales, tortoise, and duck sharing this quiet moment.

Breathing Together, detail

The child and rabbit share a quiet moment, breathing in and out, surrounded by wonderful living plants and animals of the world. For the background in the upper portion, I used fabric with bright red roses, leaves, and butterflies. The blanket on the child’s lap is covered with leaves and fruit. I added line stitching in both areas depicting a crab, cat, whales, tortoise, and duck.

In the second quilt below, two children enjoy a tea party using real china, as well as real tea, sugar, and cream. The small cups and saucers were my tea set when I was 10 years old! After me, the tea party activity skipped a generation. All the small blue and white china was carefully packed in a shoe box, squirreled away, and in time disappeared from mind, then found again and offered to the grandchildren who think it is special indeed! In the art quilt, I have changed the vibe of the party by adding vegetation and small creatures. The blue and white colors of the tea set appear in the background as well. Look carefully and find a tiny giraffe, two salamanders, a chicken, and three butterflies. Relations are symbiotic at this living-room tea party!

I hope you are finding time to enjoy quiet moments and simple rituals. We must take care of ourselves, even while we also, to the best of our ability, take part in local politics. I have a quilted fabric sign that I see each time I enter and exit the garage. My granddaughter asked “Why is that there?” It is there to remind me (and everyone) to do our best - to be kind, do your work well, be helpful, make things better. We talked about her parents and her brother as examples of people who do good.

This is a reminder message to be kind and helpful. Be good. Do good.

It’s that time of year. Time to eat salad! Cabbage salad with blueberry topping: Combine chopped green cabbage, chopped romaine lettuce, chopped fresh parsley, chopped walnuts, roasted sunflower and pumpkin seeds, and raisins. Toss with oil and vinegar and a bit of salt. Top with fresh or thawed frozen blueberries. Yum!
